Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dune Shores Health accept Medicare?

Dune Shores Health accepts all adults regardless of their insurance status, including individuals without health insurance.  The membership fee is out-of-pocket, and Dune Shores Health will not bill Medicare for its services.  Members may use Medicare to help cover medications, labs, imaging, specialists, and hospitalization when necessary.

What is direct primary care?

Direct primary care is a model that does not rely on health insurance claims. The patient-doctor relationship takes top priority. The care is transparent, affordable, and timely.

What is special about Dune Shores Health?

Dune Shores Health allows you access to Dr. Holton, an internist and geriatrician, who will partner with you on your health journey and advocate for you when you need help.

Is direct primary care the same as concierge care?

Direct primary care shares key advantages with concierge care, allowing patients to have timely and direct access to their physician. Both charge membership fees, but fees are lower in direct primary care, and direct primary care does not charge insurance in addition to the membership fees. Furthermore, direct primary care seeks to make healthcare more affordable by offering discounts on labs and medications.

Do members of Dune Shores Health still need health insurance?

Members of Dune Shores Health are not required to have health insurance. However, it is recommended that members have health insurance to cover for possible expenses like specialist visits or hospital stays.

Can I contact my doctor after-hours and on weekends?

Yes! In fact, we encourage it when necessary. Illnesses and injuries do not always happen during business hours.

What happens when I need to see a specialist?

Dr. Holton is well-connected with local specialists. He will work with you to determine your favored course of action regarding specialty referrals and relationships. He communicates with specialists on your behalf. For most specialists your insurance will be billed.

What happens when I am hospitalized?

Many hospitalizations can be avoided with greater access to your physician and more preventative and proactive care. However, sometimes hospitalization is necessary. Dr. Holton has connections with hospital leadership at Trinity Health Muskegon and Grand Haven, will make social visits to the hospital, and will communicate with the hospital doctors.

How can I determine if Dune Shores Health is right for me?
